You may not have room for big evergreen timber and shrubs to create privacy. But, would a row of one of many many columnar varieties that provide height—without the width—work? If only seasonal screening is needed, perhaps slender, columnar, deciduous trees or shrubs can be suitable? Or perhaps rising well-behaved climbers (e.g. jasmine or annual vines) on a vertical trellis could be the best answer. Capped retaining walls and raised beds can pull double obligation if they’re at seating height (approx. 17”) and softened with cushions or a folded blanket.
